My Son

During our stay in Hoi An we went to visit old ruins of an sactuary called My Son (pronounced something like ‘mee son’). It was built for the god Shiva by a hinduist tribe called Champa. It was bombed heavily during the war so there isn’t so much left of it. We saw a lot of sink holes caused by bombs around, now already covered by grass. The area itself was beautiful, far away of the main roads and surrounded by dense jungle, in the foot of their holy mountain. It took us one hour with the bus from Hoi An to get to the area and then we went on to the sactuary with electric cars like from Jurassic park.

Champa people went to the holy Cat’s tooth mountain to get holy water and came to the sanctuary for worshipping.
Wildlife taking over the remnants.
Details on the ruin. The smooth part on the top of the wall is the original one, and the one covered with moss and uneven one is the restored one.

After visiting My Son we took a boat ride to a Cam Kim island. The island is famous for wood carving, boat building and other handcrafts. For example, we saw how the shell art is made – you would think that nowadays such fine details are made with laser cutting, but here they do it by hand, with a saw.
