Kuala Selangor

From Kuala Lumpur we headed to a small town called Kuala Selangor, famous for its fireflies (kelip-kelip in Malay). To get there we had to take a 2-hour busride with a local bus. Finding the bus was a bit of hassle but in the end we managed to find it and were on our way. We arrived in Kuala Selangor about 2pm and we had only one day there so we just threw our stuff ro the hotel and set off. First for a quick lunch. The  food, by the way, was ten times cheaper than in Kuala Lumpur. After lunch we walked to a nearby nature park called Taman Alam. We didn’t have much expectations from it since we didn’t know much about it. But it turned out to be a beautiful place and we had a nice 3 km walk around the park. We saw there a lot of wildlife that we hadn’t seen before, like mudskippers, some malaysian woodpeckers and water monitor lizards. Also we saw a lot of monkeys and crabs.

After our walk we headed back to the hostel and started to think about how to get to see the fireflies, since place was a little out of town and here the bikes were not as popular as on Vietnam. Apparently there was no local bus and the only way was taking a taxi ride there and back with the driver waiting for us. And the taxi was not easy to find. We asked on the hostel reception about it, and she just gave us a card and told us that we could call there and ask. In the end we went to the bus station and ended up taking a what appeared to be a really shady taxi ride, but when we got there, everybody knew the driver.

To see the fireflies we needed a boat with a rower. You could not see them from very far, but the rowers came really close to the trees that were flashing with what looked like crazy disco Christmas lights. Surprisingly the fireflies were flashing in sync, so a whole tree was flashing at the same time.

No photos of the fireflies, you’ll have to go to see them yourselves. Meanwhile, some info on them.
