Penang

We left Teluk Nipah at about 10 am to catch the bus to Butterworth, where we could take a ferry to George Town in Penang that was our destination for next three nights. We missed the 11 am bus by 15 minutes and had to wait in Lumut for 3 hours before the next bus came. On the Lumut bus station we were once again reunited with our Swedish friends that were heading to Kuala Lumpur.

On our first day in Penang we took a bus from George Town to Penang national park. The bus ride took about 40 minutes. There were two 3 km one way treks inside the park. One to a beach called Turtle beach and one to Monkey beach. We first went to the Turtle beach. The path went though the jungle to other side of the park and on the beach with turtle nesting grounds and a meromictic lake. Which was actually dried being the dry season, naturally. The weather was actually pretty grim and every now and then we got some light rain.

After returning from the Turtle beach we decided to go still to Monkey beach. The trail was pretty different, winding along the seashore. And the weather also changed, it became sunny and hot. We started to feel pretty exhausted and at some point decided to turn around without reaching Monkey beach. And it was a lucky decision, since on our way back we saw a black giant squirrel, water monitors in three different sizes (one was really huge and heavy, looking almost like a crocodile) and more monkeys.

The biggest monitor was camera shy, but the middle-sized was kind enough to pose for us.

Second we decided to hunt down some street art which George Town is famous for. First we went to the most street art packed area of the town. And it was quite a hassle to get a picture of the art or see it sometimes. The most famous pieces were packed with tourist. Everyone of them taking a picture standing next to the art piece. After that we headed to this old bustation were we heard that there would be some cool mural paintings. The place was like a hipster heaven. It makasiinit in Helsinki. Filled up with street art and craft beer.

Brother and sister one a swing, a really sweet piece too.
Only a few more pieces we saw on our way

George Town is also famous for its food. And we got to try some good local dishes thanks to the owner of our homestay, who recommended us a few good places. For breakfest we went to a local place to eat bread with butter dipped with half cooked egg. And for dinner we went to a local food court. The concept of the food court was great. There were food stalls all around, serving different kinds of food. And all the tables were numbered. So you just went for a one or two stalls and ordered what you wanted and said your table number. The drinks came separately. There were waitors running around taking drink orders. And you paid once you got your food and drinks.
