Our first destination in Australia was Sydney. When we arrived to Sydney airport we were supposed to take a train to our hostel. But when we tried to go for the train station they said that the trains weren’t running and we had to take a bus. Later on we read that on that morning a construction crane had fell and crashed on a building near the next trainstation from the airport so they had closed the train traffic for that day.
For Sydney we didn’t have much of a plan. We had two days there before we would fly to Brisbane. First evening we just went walking to the city coastline and went to see the hyped Opera House. In Sydney we got the first glimpse of Australia’s different wildlife. Cockatoos were flying like seagulls around the city.

Most of the tourists in Sydney were on a working holiday, at least in the hostel we stayed in. In our dorm room there were four young British girls and one guy from Chile who had stayed there for a month or so. We asked them what recomendations they had to see in Sydney and they all said Blue Mountains. So that’s where we went.
We took a train to a small town in Blue Mountains, Katoomba. What a lovely calm place it was with its cafes and street art walk. What we did not expect was that it was much colder there than in Sydney, and we actually regretted not having taken the warm gloves, especially when the freezing wind started blowing. But after a warming coffee and tea we headed to the main attraction – the national park.

The really nice lady in the park info suggested us a good walking route that was mostly protected from the wind by the impressive cliffs. We took the Giant stairs down to the valley past the famous Three sisters. The name of the stairs is pretty accurate since they were pretty long and the views from them were extraordinarily beautiful and impressive. They were also really steep and sometimes hanging on the edge of the cliff, which made them pretty exciting.

On the valley floor we could feel really small among the huge trees and cliffs. There we also different birds and we got almost hit by a red parrot. Continuing our way we got to admire the white giants aka eucalyptus trees, nice waterfalls and Leura cascades and some more views. So the Blue Mountains were a really good beginning to our Australian adventure.
