Sarawak, pt 2: Bako

On our stay in Kuching we also visited a few national parks that were nearby. On our third day we desided to go to Bako national park which is famous for its wildlife. The owner of our guesthouse advised us to go to a bus ”stop” close to the guesthouse. So we went there and before the actual bus came a minibus stoped in front of us and asked if we are going to Bako. There were also a French family on board and the price was only one ringgit more than the bus so we hopped on. Before we could enter the national park we had to also take a half an hour boat ride to get there.

They said that there would be a lot of wildlife there and there was. Right in the park HQ we saw a tree snake and right in the beginning on our first trail to the jungle we saw a bearded pig walking on the path. But soon it noticed us went to the bushes. On that route we also heard proboscis monkeys and vaguely saw them jumping on top the trees. But when we came back, there were a couple of them relaxing on the trees just next to the headquarters.

A tree snake.
A bearded pig.
A family of proboscis monkeys

We also took another route that went along the shoreline and ended up on a beach. On the beach there were a lot of long-tailed macaques. And they were ready to steal any food they could get their hands on. There was a French guy with a plastic bag, where he had his clothes and snacks. He was a perfect target. First one of the macaques run to him and when he put his bag down to take a picture the monkey snatched a biscuit box from his bag. And while he was chasing the monkey another came and stole the rest of his food.

Mischieving macaques. A very photogenic family.
Nice rock formations in the park.

Just when we were leaving with the boat back we got see a proboscis monkey really upclose. It was just sitting on a tree right on the beach (see the cover image).
