Sarawak, pt 3: Kubah & Wetlands

After Bako we visited another national park, Kubah, which is known especially for its frogs and palm trees. We didn’t see any of those. Instead we saw a giant centipede and scorpion, but still had a fun day.

It started with running around Kuching’s central bus stations in a desperate hurry. The hurry was in vain, of course, since the bus was late anyway. The good things was that Kubah didn’t seem to be too popular compared to Bako and the bus was mostly empty. The park is not that big and there are few trails, and we decided to take one that took us to a waterfall where we could actually go and swim. The trail turned out to be beautiful with all the shades of green and the waterfall was perfect (apart from the fact that Valeria got a small leech in her armpit).

The next day we decided to sleep late and in the evening go to a wildlife tour on a boat in the Wetlands, but neither of these plans succeeded. Just before we were going to leave for the tour it started raining like crazy. The guide actually drove to our guesthouse to tell us that the trip is cancelled and as an apology brought us two mangos from his garden – the best mangos we’d ever had!

Luckily we still had one day left in Kuching, so we took the tour the next day, which turned to be just perfect – our boat ride was rewarded with irrawaddy dolphins, proboscis monkeys, fireflies and gleaming reflections of the crocodile eyes in the night. Additionally we got to admire an incredible sunset and enjoy the quiet night ride on the river. The tour ended at a great restaurant close to our guesthouse- we had different kinds of dishes for share with seven other tour participants.
