Sarawak, pt. 4: Kuching

Kuching, or actually kucing means cat in Bahasa Malaysian, so we spent a week in the Cat city. The good thing about it was that we could do day-trips from there to different national parks (see previous parts). The other good thing was that the city was nice and laidback. We had a really good luck with our guesthouse (Marco Polo’s), since the atmosphere over there was really friendly and social. We got to know other guests and volunteers and everybody shared their travel stories and tips on how to get around inside and outside Kuching.

Our home street for one week.

Kuching has central european feel even people and customs were truly local with chinese vibe. By european feel we mean that the city itself seems very clean and calm. It has also a riverside promenade and the main museums are free. We visited the cultural history museum that had a copy of an traditional long house inside the building and also interesting facts about aboriginal tribes in Sarawak. Otherwise, we went to see a movie and just walked around, mostly in the promenade area.

We found also a nice park where to train.

When we arrived to Kuching, an annual local food festival had just started. It was a huge event. There were hundreds of food stalls with everything from oversized fries and entire deep fried squids to unicorn ice cream and oyster omelettes. The food there appeared to be from all over South-East Asia. Additionally The festival offered different performances. For example on the day we left there would have been a semi-final for ‘Kuching got Talent’.

It was pretty busy at the food festival.
